Concept notes

Modern Varangue keeps your rooms where they are. It brings back the shade of the Creole veranda (the varangue) in a tropical modern way.

  1. Smooth black base. Smooth black render on the ground floor front, the corner pillars and the boundary walls. It hides rain splashes better than a light paint.
  2. Timber bedroom front. Horizontal timber around bedroom C's big window, flush with the facade (no projecting frame).
  3. Breeze blocks. At the stair landing and the side passage. Air and light pass through, views don't.
  4. Stair that fits. 16 steps of 17.5 cm on 30 cm treads, filling your slab openings. Black steel bars round the stairwell. The storage under the first flight still opens outside.
  5. Roof. A pergola over an L shaped sofa, planters along the parapet, and a green roof on the roof room to keep it cooler. Water tank and solar water heater (facing north, tilted 20°) behind the roof room.
  6. Street side. The street is on the palm side. A two leaf timber gate opens inwards in front of the cars, between the two short walls. A little door in a black frame lines up with the 1.06 m side door, with a paved path to the side passage. The old bottom gate is now a plain wall.
  7. Garden. A frangipani in front of the black entrance wall and three palms along the street.
  8. Small layout fixes. The outdoor sink moves to the back right corner, inside the street wall (75 cm to stand instead of 26 cm). The microwave unit sits lower to fit under the new landing.

Check facade, boundary wall and pergola changes against your permit drawings. Gates, frames and the pergola need fixings rated for cyclones.

About this model

Rebuilt in 3D from Home2 final 2nd floor 2 rooms v5 after blp.sh3x (Sweet Home 3D). Walls, slabs, beams, doors, windows and furniture keep the file's exact positions and sizes. Your plan shows the file with the changes below; Concept adds the ideas in the concept notes.

Added or changed in both views

  • Floors on the ground floor and white ceilings (the file has walls only).
  • A black wall from the entrance slider to the two posts. Under the stairs it stops at the stair's underside, so that space opens to the outside for storage. The posts are black and now reach the beam.
  • A glass guard rail, 1.00 m high, on the front balcony only.
  • Swinging doors in wood, frames included, with brass hinges (white in the file).
  • House colours from the picker: outside walls, slab edges, parapet tops and window frames. Inside walls stay white.
  • The row of grey blocks in front of the entrance is removed.
  • Sun: the real sun position for Mauritius, with north corrected to 221° from the top of the plan (the file said 315°). It opens on 6 October at 15:00; change it in Sun & time.
  • Concept: the projecting black frame around bedroom C is removed; the timber around its window stays.
